Owner/President
William Johnston co-founded Norsouth in 1986 to expand his activities as a multifamily builder, manager and developer. He maintains hands-on oversight of the company’s projects and day-to-day operations. In addition he, or one of the Norsouth entities, serve as general partner for all Norsouth developed apartment communities. He has been active in the housing industry since 1977, having earlier founded and operated two other construction and development companies.
Mr. Johnston attended Auburn University, where he earned a degree in Business Finance, graduating in 1974. After graduation and a brief stint with an Alabama building products firm, he joined Federal Homes to develop homes through the FmHA 502 program. In 1981, he established John Barnes Realty and Construction, which developed affordable homes in Georgia. He later formed Southern Family Homes, which built single and multifamily housing throughout southern Georgia and South Carolina and which, until 1989, continued to custom-build affordable homes on scattered lots through offices in Savannah, Beaufort and Charleston.
A very active participant in the housing industry for over 20 years, Mr. Johnston has served on the Boards of both the Housing Advisory Group and The Georgia Affordable Housing Coalition. He has been on the steering committee for the Georgia Housing Investment Corporation, which is a subsidiary of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board of Atlanta. Mr. Johnston previously served as Chairman of the National Association of Home Builders’ Rural Housing Council and, for three years was a Trustee of that council. He previously sat on the Board of the Home Builders Association of Savannah. He is a past member of NAHB’s State and Local Housing Finance Agencies/Affordable Housing Subcommittee, and he has served on the Task Force for Preservation of the Low Income Housing Tax Credit Development.
He currently serves on the board of Stateside Capital, LLC which is a joint venture between Norsouth Companies and Ambling Partners. Stateside Capital is a Georgia company organized to meet the needs of real estate developers and investors participating in the market for state housing tax credits.
An active participant in many Savannah area organizations, Mr. Johnston currently serves as a Trustee for the St. Joseph’s/Candler Hospital in Savannah, Georgia.
Mr. Johnston is past President of the Savannah Golf Club and has served on its Board. He has served on the Board of The Coastal Bank and was also a past Board member of the St. Joseph’s Foundation.
